mesmers the best. imho. or at least it was, when u could solo with it. still nice to be able to arcane echo things though. only other thing i could imagine would be a mo/necro, use well of power or bip, or some other hp/mana regen skill.

I've just started a monk myself and I have decided to go Elementist so when I get back to post sear I can go and get the earth element skills. My reason for this is that it will reinforce my armor.

Well i'll type up a wee bit:
Viable Classes for MONK USABILITY IN PvE
Questions you want to ask yourself: WHY __
Mo/n
Mo/e
Mo/Me
^ Most popular and through testing that I have done, the most viable.
Mo/N
Basic Breakdown: Use Energy +Sacrifice spells to bolster healing(Blood) Including occasional wells for an overall regen for a group from a corpse, also Offering of Blood is very usable
Slow recharge but the +Energy is handy at all times, especially since you can quickly regain it with a quick orison your way or any healing spell basically
Flaws: Under mass targeting you really can't use OoB successfully without adding to your damage taken
Mo/E:
Strengths: Earth Magic for protection, including Wards, Glyphs, and Armor of Earth to bolster your defence under attacks.
Glyphs to lessen high energy costs (Aegis), Wards to defend you and spellcasters in your vague area from intense damage, and armor of earth to benefit yourself
Flaws: High energy costs, to maintain Wards in can hit a lot and carrying all of these skills can heavily hurt your healing output but offers a wider variety of solo protection + group protection
Mo/me
Basic use is to steal energy (E drain, Inspired Enchantments, Drain Enchantments, power drain, etc) to raise your energy
Strengths : keeps Monk at a nicely high energy, or enough to be able to heal through, also allows for decent hex&ench removal if put into domination (Shatter, etc)
Weakness: the monk can often find themselves straying from healing into an energy thief + minor interrupter which can lead to a nasty little habit of failing to heal the party for that 12 extra energy that you really didn't "need". Also, again cuts a hole into healing
Mo/w is for solo-rs and farmers ONLY really, never seen anyone purely take advantage of /w
Mo/r - i've sortof seen this used as a pet body blocker, works ok, but is not really great, also seen traps and nature spirits used to reduce E costs but again, I haven't used nor seen it used to great functionality.
Hope that helps a bit, if not, Check out the iQ Boards for help, I've learned a bit there about monking, Link is: team-iq.net/forums

PvE monks can benefit from /w for tactics. Energy management isn't that important for pve, and most of it's elite anyways. I use spare adrenaline gained from wanding for watch yourself (which in the end saves me energy since it's that much less I have to heal), and I bring sprint and sometimes bonetti's. With a bit of forsight, you'll never die again, saving your party from wipes with rebirth.

I can't think of any nice Mo/R combos but I chose it because of the pet. But I think the Ele protection spells are the best idea.

An odd combo that works well for quite a while is Monk / Warrior. Unless you're building a farming monk, you will need to concentrate most of your skill bar on healing, and most of your skill points for Divine Favor and Healing. Leave one spot on the bar for Sprint, so you can get away to rez your party when needed.
I didn't come up with this myself, and have to credit the Prima guilde for it, but have found it works very well. Good monking doesn't need extra energy, until possibly late game. By that time you'll be at least in the desert, and most likely beyond that, so you can always switch professions to either Necro or Mesmer then.
This build will also keep your cheap deaths down to a minimum, which is nice if you track that thing.
